The Divorce Pool

I have created a bullshit way to determine the betting odds of a newly married couple's marriage ending in divorce!

I say this is bullshit because it all revolves around the idea that people feel a social pressure to get married when they're thirty. Because of this, they rush into marriage and get divorced shortly thereafter.

Since there is no way to prove that theory is correct, it's bullshit. However we'll use it anyway since that makes things easier for the betting odds.

Also, these betting odds are for entertainment purposes only.

So here's how to calculate betting odds.

First you take the average age of the couple getting married. So for example, a couple who's 24 and 28 has the average age of 26. A couple who's 25 and 28 has an average of 26.5 and so on.

For scientific purposes this average of the couple's age will be known as a.

Then we multiply by the number of years the couple has been together before marriage. If the married couple has been together less than a year, assign them the number 1.

This value will be known as y.

Then we subtract by 30. We are then left with the absolute value of the odds. We are using absolute value so we do not have negative odds. We will also round the results to avoid confusing odds.

In the end we are left with an equation that looks like this:

(a * y) - 30 = |x| with x representing 1:x.

So let's use some examples!

a couple with the average age of 28 that's been together for 4 years has this equation:

(28*4) - 30 = |x|

Do some math and we'll figure out that x equals 82. So the betting odds on this couple getting divorced are 1:82

Another example, a couple with the average age of 35 that's been together less than a year.

(35*1) - 30 = |x|

The math here is simple, and the betting odds end up being 1:5.

So now that you know the equation, have fun and use it on your friends who are deciding to get married!
